Into the Magic Shop

Author: Dr. James Doty
Publisher: Avery
Year: 2016

How is this the last day of June already? My book club read Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon’s Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart by Dr. James Doty this month. We met last night to discuss the book. Here’s the full summary:

“Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor. But back then his life was at a dead end until at twelve he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. She gave him his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart.

Doty would go on to put Ruth’s practices to work with extraordinary results—power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old, riding his orange Sting-Ray bike. But he neglects Ruth’s most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous results—until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him.

Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.”

Overall, everyone liked the book. I was the only outlier who thought his story about spending a summer learning meditation at age 12 seemed a little exaggerated. But I tend to be skeptical at times. While Doty does touch on some science, I thought there’d be more of it. It’s mostly about how he learned to control his emotions, meditation, mindfulness, intention and visualization. He learned the techniques from a woman named Ruth. Her lessons helped him achieve his goals of becoming a doctor and becoming very wealthy. It wasn’t until he lost his money when the dot com bubble burst in 2008 that he finally learned Ruth’s final lesson of opening your heart. He finally learns true compassion. He then delves into the science of how the brain and heart work together to make us happier, healthier, kinder, and more loving.

The book is a mix of autobiography, science, and self help. I found is writing could be repetitive at times and some parts sounded like he was humble bragging. But it’s definitely an inspirational story of a poor and directionless boy who becomes a respected and wildly successful physician. Doty provides instructional tips for calming the mind, meditation, visualization, and opening the heart to be more compassionate. It’s a good reminder to unplug, slow down, breathe, and try to open our hearts even if it’s only for a few minutes a day.

Do you practice meditation or what do you do to for self care?

Ruth Run

Author: Ruth Run
Narrators: Rebecca Lowman and Dan Bittner
Publisher: Penguin Random House
Year: 2025

Finally Friday! I love a good heist novel and Elizabeth Kaufman’s Ruth Run delivers.

Ruth is a microchip designer who discovers a flaw in a chip and exploits it to steal millions from large banks. Ruth goes on the run when her scheme is discovered. She’s being chased by government agents who think she’s either a national security threat or a potential intelligence asset. When she stumbles into a possible terrorism plot, the stakes get even higher. Here’s the full summary:

Twenty-six-year-old Ruth excels at microchip design but decides to get rich the old-fashioned way: robbing banks. She becomes a cybercriminal and devotes five years to siphoning more than $250 million out of the banking system using a hacked firewall chip that she created and only she knows how to access. Then one night an alarm goes off and she realizes she’s been discovered.

Five hours later she’s on the run, chased across California and the West by a slew of government agents who see her as both a high-level national security threat and a potential intelligence asset. They’ll catch her dead or alive—whatever it takes to make sure no one else discovers what she knows. Each of these men is obsessed with the woman he’s hunting, certain he knows what makes her tick. But Ruth, always a step ahead, armed with her ironic wit and a reluctant dog, eludes their understanding; can she elude their capture, too?

I really enjoyed this thriller. Ruth is a smart and savvy morally gray main character. I was rooting for her all the way. Just when the government agents think they have her all figured out, she outmaneuvers them. The pace of the plot was like a roller coaster ride. Breakneck one minute and then a slight slow down allowing Ruth and the reader to catch a breath before ramping up again. The story is told from dual POV- Ruth and Mike, the main government agent tracking her. Mike has his own creepy agenda for Ruth beyond apprehending a criminal.

This is a really well done debut novel that delivers a contemporary take on a bank heist. It had plenty of twists to keep me on the edge of my seat. Elizabeth Kaufman has found a new fan in me and I’m looking forward to seeing what she does next.

If you were planning the perfect bank heist, what would be your number one rule?

So Happy Together

Author: Olivia Worley
Narrator: Michelle H. Lee
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Year: 2025

It’s another #thrillerthurday and this one is about a romance that goes bad. Author Olivia Worley offers up a  fabulous thriller with So Happy Together. Looking at the cover, I really thought this was going to be some kind of humorous romcom thriller akin to Finley Donovan. But this turned out to be something darker and more twisted.

Jane thinks she’s found the love of her life in Colin. They hit it off after a few dates and Jane falls hard. Then Colin ghosts her and Jane sets out to get her man back. Some light stalking and trespassing leads Jane to a deadly discovery. But Jane’s going to stick by her man to the brutal end. Here’s the full summary:

Jane and Colin are soulmates. He just doesn’t know it yet.

For twenty-four-year-old Jane, finding love in New York City is even harder than making it as a playwright. So when Jane meets Colin, she can’t believe her luck: they’re perfect for each other. Even when Colin breaks off their relationship after six dates, Jane knows this is just a stumbling block. She’ll get him back. She knows she will.

That is, until Colin starts dating Zoe―perfect, luminous Zoe. Even worse, she’s actually kind of nice. But Zoe doesn’t have what it takes to love Colin. All Jane has to do is prove it, and they’ll be so happy together.

But when Jane sneaks into Colin’s apartment, she makes a shocking discovery―one that will ensnare them all in a dark web of lies, secrets, and murder.

Unrelentingly twisty and utterly compelling, So Happy Together is an unputdownable, shattering read―a riveting blend of You, Riley Sager, and Promising Young Woman.

Some hearts get broken, some get even.

The twists in this book surprised me to no end and kept me listening until way past my bedtime. I flew through this audiobook because I was so hooked. Michelle H. Lee’s narration is excellent and really brings the characters and story to life. Pick this one up asap for a twisted good time! What book has kept you riveted and turning pages lately?

King of Ashes

Author: S.A. Cosby
Narrator: Adam Lazard’s-White
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Year: 2025

What do you get when you mix Shakespeare with The Godfather, fold in some family secrets and lies, and add a heaping dash of Southern noir? You get S.A. Cosby’s The King of Ashes

Cosby knows how to write brutal characters willing to do anything to save their families. Roman Carruthers is a savvy businessman who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and sacrifice others to keep his younger siblings safe. Cosby keeps the tension high and the body count raising as Roman desperately tries to get his family out from under the thumb of the psychopathic brothers who run the local crime syndicate.

This was my most anticipated book of the year and it didn’t disappoint. It had everything I’ve come to expect from one of his books- a complex and layered main character, pedal to the metal action, a rural setting hiding dark and dangerous things, and lots of twists and turns. Adam Lazarre-White’s narration is fantastic. He really brings the characters to life from Dante’s petulant attitude, to Roman’s fear and determination, to the quiet and deadly menace of brothers Roman goes up against. Cosby once again proves he’s the reigning king of crime fiction.

Vera Wang’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers

Author: Jesse Q. Sutanto
Narrator: Eunice Wong
Publisher: Penguin Audio
Year: 2023

Do you read cozy mysteries? Here’s a fantastic cozy mystery. It’s Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutano. When Vera, the elderly owner of a tea shop, finds a dead body she decides to solve the murder.

I usually like my mysteries gritty and hard boiled, but I loved this fun cozy. Vera is an absolute gem of a character. She’s a little pushy and thinks she knows best, but she has a big heart and she’s funny as heck. Vera starts out as a lonely widow in her failing tea shop. She has one regular customer and a son who has a busy career. Finding the body and playing detective gives her purpose and a group of new friends. Sure, her new friends are all suspects in the murder investigation, but Vera knows she’ll crack the case.

This is a humorous and touching story of friendship with a well plotted mystery that has lots of twists and turns. The audiobook with narration by Eunice Wong is fabulous! I highly recommend it. When I finished listening to it, I immediately put a library hold on the second book which published in April. I’m so here for more of Vera’s adventures.

She aspires to one day find one (1) hobby.

Atmosphere

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid
Narrators: Julia Whelan and Kristen DeMurcurio
Publisher: Random House Audio
Year: 2025

Have you heard of this obscure little book Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid? Of course you have. It’s one of the summer’s biggest blockbuster books. I’m sure you’ve already seen a ton of reviews for it and you probably don’t need another. But here’s mine anyway: I loved it. It was one of my most anticipated books this year and it didn’t disappoint. I loved the characters, the plot, the astronaut training, and the love story.

I started reading it on my kindle, but switched to the audiobook because I have dry eyes and reading for more than 20 minutes at a time is difficult. The audiobook is narrated by Julia Whelan and Kristen DiMercurio. They did a fantastic job bringing the characters and the story to life. Whelan once again proves she the best in the business. The tension and emotion of her performance in the last chapter of the book is intense, exceptional, and heartbreaking.

Atmosphere gets all the stars from me. This is already on my top ten list for the year.

Have you read anything this year that you know will be in your top ten for the year?

Stillwater

Author: Tanya Scott
Publisher: Grove Atlantic
Publication date: August 12, 2025

Thank you Grove Atlantic and NetGalley for the e-arc of Stillwater by Tanya Scott.

Jack worked hard to escape a life of crime working for a local mob boss. He changed his name to Luke and reinvented himself as a hard working college student. A chance encounter with his former boss pulls Luke back into the dangerous life he left. Can Luke escape with his life again?

This is a solid debut novel. It’s got classic thriller themes like criminal with a heart of gold, bad parenting and childhood trauma leads hero to find a father figure in a crime boss, and hero falls for a girl who’s father is in trouble with the crime boss. The pace of the story is good and the timeline shifts from present to past as Luke recalls the events in his that lead to his present day troubles. There’s even some family secrets and lies thrown in.

Overall, I liked it. I was rooting for Luke to get the life he’s always wanted. Stillwater is out Aug. 12th

Happy Friday! Any plans for the weekend? We’re going to a graduation party.

Thank you Booksparks, author James Grady, and Pegasus Books for the #src2025 #gifted book! American Sky is an expansive and atmospheric coming of age novel. Here’s the summary:

“For the teenaged Luc, his days are preoccupied with the daily dramas of high school. President John F. Kennedy's assassination seems a world away. But the winds of history find their way to his small Montana town as marijuana clouds rise in the hallways and the notices of neighborhood young men "Killed in Action" in Vietnam keep arriving at an increasing rate.

From blue-collar life in the heartland to Kent State and the Civil Rights movement, American Sky is a sweeping narrative that builds to a crime that threatens to tear Luc's world apart.”

Fifty Fifty

Author: Steve Cavanagh
Narrator: Adam Sims
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Year: 2025

Monday already?! Thank you Simon & Schuster Audio for the #gifted audiobook!

NYC defense attorney Eddie Flynn takes on one of his toughest cases in Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh. Two sisters are charged with the brutal murder of their father. They accuse each other of the slaying. Both were at the scene when the murder occurred. There’s forensic evidence from both sisters on the body. Who’s the guilty one?

This is a fast paced cat and mouse thriller. Sisters Alexandria and Sophia are total opposites. Eddie’s client Sophia has a history of mental illness and addiction, making her the underdog of the trial when compared to her more successful sister. Cavanagh’s cleaver writing kept me guessing until the end. This is the fifth book in the Eddie Flynn series, but it works as a standalone book. I’m reading the series out of order without any problems. Narrator Adam Sims does a fantastic job bringing the characters and story to life. This is a great choice if you’re looking for a quick and twisty legal thriller.

Have you ever served on a jury? I was served on a federal grand jury. We were impaneled for 18 months and usually met two or three times a month. It was our job to decide if there was sufficient evidence that a crime was committed to indict the accused to send them on for trial. It was really interesting to be a part of it.

About the Author

Steve Cavanagh is an Irish author from Belfast and at the age of eighteen he studied law by mistake. He is now the international award-winning author of the Eddie Flynn novels. His debut novel, The Defense, was nominated for the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award for Thriller of the Year, and The Plea won the Prix Polar Award for Best International Novel. Steve is still a practicing lawyer (someday he’ll get the hang of it) and co-host of the chart-topping podcastTwo Crime Writers And A Microphone. He has been involved in several high-profile civil rights cases, his Eddie Flynn novels have been published in over twenty countries, he’s married with two young children, and in his spare time he is mostly asleep.

The Dark Maestro

Author: Brendan Slocumb
Narrator: Ronald Peet
Publisher: Random House Audio
Year: 2025

Happy #thrillerthursday! I’ll admit that when I read the summary for Brendan Slocumb’s first book, The Violin Conspiracy, I was skeptical. But that book pulled me right it. I found it just so compelling. I liked his second book Symphony of Secrets too. The Dark Maestro is his latest book. It’s about a cello player, on the verge of making it big in the rarified air of symphony music, who loses everything.

This story is kind of a hot mess. I liked the characters. Curtis is a musical genius and a big comic book loving nerd. Curtis and his dad Zippy had a strong relationship although there were some rocky times. It took Zippy some time to realize how talented Curtis is. Larissa,Zippy’s girlfriend, really supported and loved Curtis. Zippy worked for a a criminal operation dealing in illegal organ harvesting and agrees to testify to stay out of prison. The family goes into witness protection and Curtis is forced to give up his musical career. Looking for a creative outlet Curtis starts an online comic starring a superhero cello player. After several years in witsec and with the bad guys still looking for them, the family decides to take matters into their own hands and go after the guys who run the illegal organ harvesting ring. The chapters with the family in witsec got a little slow and dragged after a while. But the messy part for me started when Zippy and Larissa were able to leave the country to find the clinic where the organ harvesting was taking place. Larissa was able to get a job at the clinic to try to find some evidence. It got even more over the top after that. Curtis and his family got their revenge, but not without heartache.

I liked this book and thought Ronald Peet did a wonderful job narrating it. He really brought the characters to life, but it’s not my favorite of Slocumb’s books. I’ll still recommend this one, but The Violin Conspiracy is far better.

Can you play a musical instrument? Did you ever take lessons?
