Book mail: American Sky

Thank you Booksparks, author James Grady, and Pegasus Books for the #src2025 #gifted book! American Sky is an expansive and atmospheric coming of age novel. Here’s the summary:

“For the teenaged Luc, his days are preoccupied with the daily dramas of high school. President John F. Kennedy's assassination seems a world away. But the winds of history find their way to his small Montana town as marijuana clouds rise in the hallways and the notices of neighborhood young men "Killed in Action" in Vietnam keep arriving at an increasing rate.

Acclaimed novelist James Grady's American Sky brings to life the world of a young man who is caught in the nexus of vast social change. From blue-collar life in the heartland to Kent State and the Civil Rights movement, American Sky is a sweeping narrative that builds to a crime that threatens to tear Luc's world apart.”

I can’t wait to dive into this one!

Does this one sound interesting to you? What book mail have you gotten recently?

Book Mail- Where the Bones Lie

Author: Nick Kolakowski
Publisher: Datura Books
Publication date: March 11, 2025

I got awesome book mail yesterday and have to show it off for Thriller Thursday. Many thanks to author Nick Kolakowski and Datura Books for this gifted copy!

Synopsis: For Dash Fuller, Hollywood’s underbelly is home. He’s spent years making the film industry’s worst secrets disappear, and it’s left him a cynical burnout with a taste for bourbon and self-loathing.

But when a young woman comes to him with a peculiar quest, Dash sees a chance at redemption. Madeline Ironwood is the daughter of Ken Ironwood, a notorious smuggler and murderer who disappeared 20 years ago. Ken’s skeleton has just been discovered in a barrel at the bottom of a dried-up lake, and Madeline wants to know who killed him.

Dash agrees to help, and as this desperate daughter and jaded cynic claw their way through a world of sun-bleached secrets, crooked cops, and Hollywood thugs, they soon uncover a conspiracy involving some of LA’s most powerful people.

This one sounds right up my alley and I can’t wait to dive. It publishes on March 11, so keep an eye out for my review before then.

Let’s play predictive text: the bones lie____

Someone, or something, is haunting the ship. Between unexplained disappearances and eerie deaths, the guests of the Titanic—particularly maid Annie Hebley and guest Mark Fletcher—are convinced there’s something sinister afoot. But before they can unveil the danger that beckons them, disaster strikes.

Years later, Annie is working as a nurse on the sixth voyage of the Titanic’s sister ship, the Britannic, newly refitted as a hospital ship. When she happens across an unconscious Mark, now a soldier fighting in World War I, Annie is relieved to see he survived the sinking. But soon Mark’s presence awakens deep-buried secrets, a creeping darkness forcing Annie to reckon with the demons of her past—as they both discover the terror may not yet be over.

Spooky Titanic horror? Yes, please!

๐—ฆ๐˜†๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€: Charlotte is a British expatriate who has recently settled in the nation’s capital with her second husband, a man who looks intriguingly like Clark Gable, but her enviable dinner parties and soirรฉes aren’t the only things she is planning. Meanwhile, Charlie Leigh-Hunt has been posted to Washington as a replacement for Guy Burgess, last seen disappearing around the corner and into the Soviet Union. Charlie is soon shocked to cross paths with Charlotte, an old flame of his, who, thanks to all her gossipy parties, has a packed pocketbook full of secrets she is eager to share. Two decades or so later, in 1969, Joe Wilderness is stuck on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain, held captive by the KGB, a chip in a game way above his pay grade—but his old friends Frank and Eddie are going to try to spring him out of the toughest prison in the world. All roads lead back to Berlin, and to the famous Bridge of Spies…

Sounds like lots of intrigue in the post WWII era! Can’t wait to dive into this one! Espionage thriller lovers mark you calendars. Moscow Exile publishes next Tuesday, April 18th.

๐’๐ฒ๐ง๐จ๐ฉ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ: 1940s: Elise is a young French woman secretly helping the resistance in German-occupied Paris. Sebastian is a young German soldier working as a translator. They meet, fall in love, and are relishing in the unforeseen happiness they have found in one another, despite being on opposite sides of the war. After liberation, however, the young couple is tragically torn apart, with Sebastian arrested by the French resistance and Elise captured and shamed as a ‘collabo’ by her own people, before being sent to Brittany for her own protection.

The lovers are parted, each believing the other to be lost forever.

1960s: Elise and her 18-year-old daughter, Josephine, live in Brittany, France, with Brigitte, a gruff and bitter Frenchwoman who took Elise in after the war. Josephine has always been told that her father was a Frenchman who died when she was a baby—but when she discovers she is, in fact, the daughter of a German soldier, she travels to England to find out more about her real father. To her shock, she learns he is not dead, but living in the U.K. where he settled after the war and made a new life with his wife, Margaret, an Englishwoman who knows nothing of his past.

When Josephine reveals that her mother Elise is still alive, Sebastian must make the most difficult decision of his life: honor his duty to his new family, or return to his first great love?

Returned from our stay at the beach to find this book in the the pile of mail that was waiting for me at the post office.

Synopsis: PI Pete Fortunato wakes up one morning with a bad taste in his mouth. This is never a good sign. When a beautiful woman wants to hire him to find her husband, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. Within a day, Fortunato finds the husband in the apartment of his client’s young, stud lover. He’s been shot once in the head. Case closed. But when his client’s check bounces, and a couple of Albanian gangsters show up outside his building and kidnap him, hoping he’ll lead them to a large sum of money supposedly stolen by the dead man, he begins to realize there’s a good chance he’s been set up to take the fall for the murder and the theft of the money.

In an attempt to get himself out of a jam, Fortunato winds up on a wild ride that takes him down to Texas where he searches for his client’s lover who he suspects has the money and holds the key to solving the murder.

Author: Jay Newman

Publisher: Scribner Books

Publishing: January 25, 2022

๐Ÿ“ช ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐Œ๐š๐ข๐ฅ! ๐Ÿ“ช

Thank you @scribnerbooks for this #gifted copy of Undermoney by Jay Newman. This looks like a terrific #thriller and I can’t wait to dive in!

Synopsis-
An electrifying thriller about a group of American operatives who secretly take over the world’s largest dark money fund—an astonishing, audacious debut by a seasoned insider of global finance.

When a U.S. airdrop of billions of dollars disappears in the desert sands of Syria, only a small group of military operatives knows its ultimate destination or why it has been stolen. Their goal is no less than the restoration of America’s geopolitical dominance on the global stage. Essential to this scheme are Greta Webb, a sophisticated CIA operative who is an expert on dark money, not to mention lethally skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and Elias Vicker, the damaged, dangerous soul who runs the world’s largest hedge fund.

To achieve its goals, the group must form dangerous alliances. One is with the hidden family that manages the largest private pool of capital that has ever existed. Another is with Fyodor Volk, the ruthless founder of Russia’s most successful private military company, a mercenary with ties to Vladimir Putin. Volk has his eye on Greta. She would be wise to avoid him but cannot.

Arcing from Manhattan’s finest apartments to Washington, D.C., from Middle Eastern war zones to private European bank vaults, Jay Newman’s Undermoney follows the Americans as they are enmeshed in the world of dark money and confront ever-increasing danger. Ultimately, they must decide whether their objectives are worth the cost of sacrificing not just a few but potentially many human lives. Brilliantly rendered with the details only a sophisticated financial insider knows and filled with jaw-dropping action, Undermoney reveals the secret intentions and savage deeds of the world’s richest people.

Undermoney publishes on January 25th.

QOTD: What’s your latest binge watching recommendation?

Today is our 33rd wedding anniversary. We’ve been married so long we don’t give each other gifts anymore. But the other day a box was delivered to the house. My husband said he bought a new reading lamp for our bedroom and told me to open the box to see if I liked it. This book was in the box with the lamp. I asked him why he bought Little Steven’s autobiography. Hubby said “Oh. I didn’t think it would be delivered in the same box with the lamp. The book is for you. Happy anniversary, Merry Christmas, and happy birthday.” He knows I’m a huge Springsteen fan and figured I’d want to read what The Boss’s bff had to say. He’s a keeper!

Taking a few days off for the holiday! Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating! I hope Santa leaves lots of books under the tree for you! ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ“š

QOTD: what was your hidden gem book this year? In other words, what book did you love that wasn’t a bookstagram darling and seemed to fly under the radar?

My hidden gem was Heaven’s a Lie by Wallace Stroby. A young woman finds a satchel full of cash and must deal with the deadly consequences. A great action thriller!

Book Mail

๐Ÿ“ซ๐˜ฝ๐™ค๐™ค๐™  ๐™ˆ๐™–๐™ž๐™ก ๐Ÿ“ซ

Thank you Kensington Books for this #gifted copy of Ink and Shadows by Ellery Adams.  The main character is a librarian turned bookseller who solves mysteries! Is that my dream job, or what?! I can’t wait to dive into this one!

Synopsis: Controversy erupts in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, when the owner of the local bookstore tries to play peacekeeper—but winds up playing detective instead…

Known for her window displays, Nora Pennington decides to showcase fictional heroines like Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Madeline Miller’s Circe for Halloween. But a family-values group disapproves of the magical themes and wastes no time launching a modern-day witch hunt. Suddenly, former friends and customers are targeting not only Nora and Miracle Books, but a new shopkeeper, Celeste, who’s been selling CBD oil products.

Nora and her friends in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society are doing their best to put an end to the strife—but then someone puts an end to a life. Declared an accident, the ruling can’t explain the old book page covered with strange symbols and disturbing drawings left under Nora’s doormat. It’s up to Nora and the Secret, Book, and Scone Society to sort out the clues before more bodies turn up and the secrets from Celeste’s past come back to haunt them all…

QOTD: What are you looking forward to this week?

I’m looking forward to the electrician installing the ceiling lights in the living room today. Also looking forward to new recliners and an end table being delivered tomorrow. ๐Ÿ˜„
