There are so many layers to Deb Caletti’s latest YA contemporary novel. Imani Jade Powers’ narration is nuanced and gripping. This isn’t just a breezy summer romance story. Charlotte’s feelings towards Bruni are complicated. She’s overwhelmed and star struck because she loves his words and his books. She wants him to notice her they way he pays attention so some of the other students in the workshop. When Bruni starts to flirt with Charlotte, she is both flattered by his attention and then increasingly uncomfortable with it. Coletti weaves together the past and the present into a compelling story of two girls standing up to powerful men. TW: grooming, sexual assault, slut shaming.
