Emma and Ben, a married couple expecting their first baby, buy a dilapidated Victorian house in upstate New York. They move in, the renovation gets underway, and then weirdness starts. 

The house used to be an old rehab facility for alcoholic Broadway actors. Emma finds a diary in the attic written by a long ago Broadway ingenue who gets knocked up by a very famous and married leading man. He sends the girl to the rehab center to hide the pregnancy and give the baby up for adoption. The diary begins to hint at nefarious things going on as the unnamed writer becomes more afraid for herself and her soon to be born baby. 

Emma begins to feel isolated and alone in the house while her husband spends most of his time working in the city. Soon she notices weird things starting to happen. Is the old house full of evil or cursed? Is her husband gaslighting her? 

I’ve been trying to avoid psychological thrillers. Most of them just don’t work for me anymore. Psychological thrillers are so prevalent that it’s hard to escape them. But I thought I’d give one a try. I read Beneath the Stairs a little while ago and liked the premise of a spooky of house. 

I enjoyed the narration by Emily Tremaine and Kevin R. Free. I thought this story was all right until the last chapter that contained the big twist. This chapter just came so far out of left field that it didn’t even make any sense to me. I thought it took away from the rest of the story and was unnecessary. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 

I’m sure many other readers who love psychological and domestic thrillers will enjoy this one especially if they like isolated spooky houses.
