Shield of Sparrows

Author: Devney Perry
Narrator: Samantha Brentmoor
Publisher: Tantor Media
Year: 2025

Happy Tuesday book people! You guys know I don’t read a lot of fantasy. Shield of Sparrows was a total bookstagram made me read it book for me. It’s been all over my feed. When I opened Libby last week and saw the audiobook was available, I figured that was a sign to give it a go. Here’s the full summary from the publisher:

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I’ve spent my life kneeling―to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father’s throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I’m crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him―bound to a future I didn’t choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I’m not―a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there’s power in being underestimated?

And what if―for the first time―I reached for it?

I ended up liking it. For a fantasy, I thought the world building was very accessible. That’s a big plus for someone like me who’s not that into fantasy. The lead characters didn’t have odd names, so I could easily keep track of who was who. Even the names of the monsters weren’t too outrageous. The landscapes of the kingdoms didn’t seem too alien either.  I liked Odessa, the FMC. She was smart and feisty. I totally called the twists about the Guardian and the marriage right off the bat. So I wasn’t shocked by those twists. My only quibble was that it was a bit too long for my taste and there were a few spots that dragged for me. I liked Samantha Brentmoor’s narration. Her narration to me sounded like Odessa was telling her crazy life story to her new best friend. I thought it made the audiobook a fun and enjoyable listen.

Did this book turn me into a full fledged fantasy reader? No, but I’ll probably read the sequel.

Have you read this book? Is it on your tbr? What’s the last book you read outside your usual reading zone?
