What happens when a dead snitch, a serial killer, and a domestic terror plot are all connected?
Inside Man by John McMahon puts us right back into the thick of things with the FBI’s PAR unit. I’m thrilled to have this crew together again.
Gardner Camden is now running the show. He’s still the same hard-charging, brilliantly quirky (and clearly neurodivergent) investigator fans will remember. Gardner can get so wrapped up in puzzles, patterns, and microscopic details that he occasionally forgets basic manners, but that’s part of what makes him so compelling. His mind is always ten steps ahead, even if his social filter lags behind.
When the team’s confidential informant on a major case turns up dead, Gardner and the PAR unit scramble to find another way inside a dangerous radical militia group planning something big. That investigation takes a dark turn when they uncover what appears to be a serial killer targeting women. Suddenly, everything is connected or at least it might be. The race is on to figure out how their dead snitch ties into a possible series killer, stop the murders, and dismantle a looming domestic terror plot before it’s too late.
This story is packed with interwoven threads, sharp twists, and escalating tension. McMahon keeps the pace fast and the stakes high. I really enjoyed how the seemingly separate cases slowly snap together into a much bigger picture. On audio, Will Damron does excellent work bringing both the characters and the urgency of the story to life.
Even though this is the second book in the series, it works perfectly well as a standalone. A big thank you to Macmillan Audio for the early listen. Inside Man is out January 13. Add it to your tbr list! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
QOTD: Do you prefer crime thrillers with one tight central case or stories with multiple threads that slowly snap together?
