June Reading Wrap Up

I read 15 books in June and I could not tell you what they say about me as a person. Murder, penguins, tennis, a summer romance, more murder. A month of chaos. So I'm skipping the tidy wrap up and just giving out awards.

🏆 Book of the month: Killer Vibes by Jack Friday. A broke, bisexual, perpetually-stoned PI inherits a crumbling Austin house and a bag of cash, then starts to suspect his uncle's death wasn't an accident. Funny, twisty, the first in a series I'm absolutely staying for. (5⭐)

☀️ Best comfort read: Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan. A single mom back in her hometown fake-dates the rich guy her town is literally named after. Warm, sharp, a little teary at the end. (5⭐)

🎾 Biggest surprise: The Open Era by Edward Schmit. A debut about the first openly gay man to play a Grand Slam — the anxiety, the spotlight, the rival across the net. I grabbed it for the tennis and it wrecked me. (5⭐)

😈 Left a mark: Molka by Monika Kim. A Korean horror-thriller about the hidden-camera epidemic, female rage, and one very overdue revenge. Brutal, and I couldn't look away. (4⭐)

💅 Most fun: Hot Girl Murder Club by Ashley Winstead. A pop star gets framed for a string of Hollywood murders while chasing justice for her sister. Bloody, glittery, made to binge. (4⭐)

🐧 Wild card: How the Penguins Saved Veronica by Hazel Prior. A prickly, wealthy old woman flies to Antarctica to meet the penguins and, fine, herself. My book club pick this month, and far more charming than I expected. (4⭐)

🎧 Best on audio: The Neighbors Are Watching by Aggie Blum Thompson. The suburban-paranoia listen that made every dog walk and grocery run vanish. (4⭐)
