Beneath the Stairs is about an unusually shaped house in the middle of the woods. Three murders took place there and the house was abandoned after that. As kids, Claire and her friend Abby went into the house to explore. Something happened to Abby in that house and she was never the same. 

Twenty years later Claire is back in her sleepy hometown. Abby attempted suicide in the cellar of the creepy old house. Claire knows there is something very wrong with the house and sets out to discover the house’s secrets before another young girl become it’s victim. 

What is it about a haunted house story that pulls us right in? This had a lots of creepiness without being a horror gore-fest and I appreciated that. The story has shifting timelines as Claire tries to piece together the house’s history and reconcile with events in her past. Author Jennifer Fawcett infuses the story with lots is sinister atmosphere and chills. Carolina Hoyos provided an edge-of-your-seat narration that kept me riveted. This is a solid and enjoyable horror debut that will give you the shivers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

QOTD: did you ever explore some place creepy when you were a kid? 

My answer: my friends and I occasionally explored an old deserted barn. It wasn’t that creepy, but we only went in the daytime.
